Chapter 17

With Sebastian still on her mind, Cassie settled into her shift at the diner.

With so many questions floating through her mind about Sebastian and the murder, Cassie found it hard to concentrate as she served the customers who came and left. She did her best to focus, but she mixed up a few orders, and endured some complaints from the diners. Each time she received one, she glanced over at Mirabel, who met her eyes, then looked away. She wanted the job, that was for sure, but she wondered how many mistakes it would take before Mirabel decided that she was more trouble than she was worth.

Feeling frustrated, Cassie did her best to clear her thoughts. After a few minutes of keeping herself calm, she began to get into the swing of the routine. Everything went much smoother.

Until, she noticed Tessa waving to her through the window of the diner.

Cassie waved back, pointed to her watch and indicated she’d be out in a few minutes.

Tessa nodded.

Once Cassie had made sure that all of her tables had everything they needed, she sent a guilty glance in Mirabel’s direction, but she was busy with the customers at the counter. She hurried to the door and stepped out to greet Tessa.

“Hi Tessa. Sorry, I had to take care of a few tables.”

“That’s okay. It’s a bit too crowded in there for me. But I brought you a slice of pie.” Tessa held up a small container.

“Thank you so much for bringing me the pie, but it really is busy in there.” Cassie took the container that Tessa offered her.

“It sure looks like it. Good luck!” Tessa started to walk back to her car.

“Tessa wait! Are you sure you don’t want to come in for a cup of coffee or something? I can make it for you. It should get quiet in about fifteen minutes, I might get a chance to sit and eat the pie with you.” Cassie held open the door for her.

“I don’t know.” Tessa stared through the door at the crowd of people.

“Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it looks, most people are finishing up their meals.” Cassie tipped her head toward the counter. “See? The counter is already starting to clear out.”

“I guess, just for a few minutes.” Tessa made her way inside.

“Cassie, table twelve!” Mirabel shouted to her from behind the counter.

“On it!” Cassie hurried over to the frustrated diners who had been waiting on her.

“Tessa?” Mirabel smiled, as she patted an empty spot on the counter. “Come sit, I’ll get you some coffee.”

Relieved that Tessa would be taken care of, Cassie apologized to the diners, then made up for her absence with smiles and as much extra attention as she could manage. By the time she had a chance to sit down next to Tessa, her legs ached from all of the running around.

“Tell me again why you do this to yourself?” Tessa sipped her coffee as she looked at her.

“It’s a good job.” Cassie ignored her burning feet and took a bite of the apple pie.
